Welcome to the web site of St Albans Townsend Bowls Club
8 Waverley Road, St Albans, AL3 5PA - 01727 846333
Located in the historic city of St Albans, Hertfordshire we are an active and welcoming outdoor bowling club with a full calendar of friendly and competitive events during the summer along with social events throughout the year.
Townsend Bowls Club competes at many different levels, involving almost all its members in matches against other clubs.
Friendlies are held, both at midweek and weekends against other local teams. These are normally mixed, and played in the spirit for which bowls is known - very often starting and finishing with a drink in the bar along with one's opponents! No less that 9 new starters played for the club last season, having been trained by our highly qualified and experienced pair of coaches.
This season has been particularly special as we have celebrated our centenary with matches against other clubs who share this milestone, as well as a game against the Royal Household at Windsor and ones against touring teams such as London Welsh and London Scottish and a District select team made up of members of other clubs in the St Albans area.
It has been an extrordinary season so far and there is still plenty to come. To date there have been more than 90 matches, some friendly, many more competitive and with some spectacular results. We have won through to the final stages of the two major District team competitions and were also extremely succesful in the Hertfordshire Club league. We have no less than FIVE teams competing in the District Finals with representation in the Singles, Triples, Mixed Fours and most notably, twoTownsend teams playing one another in the Gorambury Fours final for the first time since records began.
As well as having what is generally considered to be one if the better greens in the County, Townsend has a very modern club house with a newly refurbished kichen, a well stocked bar, a main lounge with large picture windows overlooking the green and two viewing galleries offering a birdseye view of the competition below.
Our season started on Sunday April 14th when Annie Brewster, our local County Councillor with special responsibility for leisure and sport in the area opened the green. We are delighted to report she has readily agreed to accept our invitation to present our centenial trophies and participate in backing the winners at our ever popular Race Night in mid October.
New to bowls?
Finally, although our season finishes at the end of September there is still time to try our sport and our two county qualifed trainers will be happy to show you the ropes. All that is required is that you wear a pair of flat shoes - we will provide everything else!
