Welcome to the web site of St Albans Townsend Bowls Club
8 Waverley Road, St Albans, AL3 5PA - 01727 846333
Located in the historic city of St Albans, Hertfordshire we are an active and welcoming outdoor bowling club with normally a full calendar of friendly and competitive events during the summer along with social events throughout the year. We are currently limited by the covid restrictionsto holding limited sessions on the green whilst the full program is on hold but we look forward to re-opening as soon as the restrictions are lifted.
Townsend Bowls Club competes at many different levels, involving almost all its members in matches against other clubs.
When allowed friendlies are held both midweek and at weekends against other local teams. These are normally mixed and played in the spirit for which bowls is known - very often starting and finishing with a drink in the bar along with one's opponents. New starters are always welcome at the club where we offer beginner training by our two highly qualified and experienced coaches.
Last season was particularly special as we celebrated our centenary with matches against other clubs who shared this milestone, as well as a games against the Royal Household at Windsor and touring teams including London Welsh, London Scottish and a District select team made up of members of other clubs in the St Albans area.
As well as having what is generally considered to be one of the better greens in the County, Townsend has a very modern club house with a newly refurbished kichen, a well stocked bar, a main lounge with large picture windows overlooking the green and two viewing galleries offering a birdseye view of the competition below.
Our originally published plan was to start the season on Sunday April 12th when Annie Brewster, our local County Councillor with special responsibility for leisure and sport in the area had agreed to open the green. She had also readily agreed to accept our invitation to present our trophies and participate in backing the winners at our ever popular Race Night in mid October. Until a date for a full reopening after the shut down is confirmed by the Government, the rearrannged schedule for these events cannot be confirmed.
New to bowls?
Finally, although we are currently in partial shut down we have re-opened in a limited way and hope that it will be safe for us to fully re-open later this year in time for newcomers to try our sport with our two county qualifed trainers, who will be happy to show you the ropes. All that will be required is that you wear a pair of flat shoes - we will provide everything else!
